Battlefield 2 Patch 1.50 Finally Gets Release Date PDF  | Print |  E-mail

BF2 PatchAfter more than a year of primping and preening, the Battlefield 2 1.50 patch is actually going to see the light of day. There have been three betas released to varying degrees of success but DICE is comfortable with the results and will release the patch on September 1st.

In addition to the new map - Operation Blue Pearl - the patch now makes Highway Tampa a mandatory install and also frees up two of the expansion packs. That means you'll be able to play Armored Fury and Euroforce maps for free. What you won't get though is Special Forces which is too bad because that's the only expansion pack worth your time.

So, we get new maps, widescreen support, more RAM support and a couple of other updates. I hope this helps breath some life into BF2 for a little while because the only PC FPS game coming up that you'll want to play online isn't being released until November 10th (MW2).

BF1943 PC Delay

This pains me to even put it on the screen. Gordon Van Dyke, the BF1943 boss has said the PC version of BF1943 is being delayed until Q1 2010. This is backed up accordingly at gaming industry news clearinghouse Games Press (in the image above.) The reasons were adding features. You know, the features you were expecting to be in there that for some reason they haven't been working on yet?
  • These reasons include:
  • Support for ranked server provider hosting
  • Joystick support
  • Voip
  • 32 player game size
These are the expected features as I've already mentioned looking at this as a PC gamer - there is nothing listed that I didn't think was going to be there already. So, this seems to me to be a case of someone either not being entirely truthful or DICE just really dropped the ball on this.

ArmA IIBohemia Interactive is having some success with ArmA II because of a couple of reasons. First, it's a pretty empty field out there for new PC FPS games. Second, this was a long awaited sequel with a rabid fan base from the original ArmA. Lastly, Bohemia has made the game accessible for different types of games, most of all the people that like to tweak their games and do custom scenarios.

In keeping with the last reason, the firm released a complete set of mod tools that will allow gamers to tweak a whole of of stuff in the game. Users can modify and create their own content from camo, vehicles, models and weapons or even whole new environments and share them online. The new mod tools are available to download now from http://community.bistudio.com/wiki/BI_Tools_2 ARMA II mod tools require ARMA II version 1.03. The tool suite consists of:

Oxygen 2 Personal Edition for ARMA II - model editing and animation package
Visitor 3 Personal Edition for ARMA II - terrain and map editing
TexView 2 - texture convertor and viewer
BinPBO Personal Edition - packer
Sound Tools - sound and lipsync utilities
FSM Editor - tool to edit and compile fsms used in ARMA II
BinMake - conversion tool
Tools Drive - main working directory for tools with mandatory data files

ArmA II Operation Arrowhead

ArmA II is getting a little expansion pack, or DLC to you newer kids, entitled Operation Arrowhead and it goes a little like this: Three years after the conflict in Chernarus, portrayed in the original ARMA II, a new flashpoint in the Green Sea region heats up and coalition forces led by the US Army are sent to Takistan to quickly restore peace and prevent further civilian casualties.

Set into the new, visually attractive environment of hilly central Asia, Operation Arrowhead will offer realistic combat simulation experience in a modern day setting with unprecedented freedom of movement, actions and tactics. Players will enlist into various roles within the US Army, from basic infantrymen, through special operatives, to pilots and tank crew in this new installment in the award winning line up of military simulators for PC from Bohemia Interactive.
OK, sounds interesting and it's always nice to see some new content so soon after a game's launch. Speaking of launch... there is no release date available for this yet but I'll be sure to post as soon as I find one.

I don't know how it did it but Battlefield Heroes has hit the one million player mark. Oh wait, I do know how - it's free.

Still, after having given it a try several times and walking away I'm surprised that it's doing so well but it's good news because I want the Battlefield series to enjoy success because that will help make Battlefield 3 a better game by giving it more resources (in theory...).
